I love to read, so you’ll probably find a lot of book recommendations on this site in the future. Not that I have time to read much these days, but I find ways to squeeze it in. And I’m so glad I read this book, “Teaching from Rest, A Homeschooler’s Guide to Unshakable Peace” by Sarah Mackenzie.
This is my first year homeschooling the kids and I have to say, things can get really overwhelming really fast. There’s curriculum to worry about, kids being with you every second of the day when before they were at school, family and friends telling you what you’re doing wrong and asking, again, how your kids will be socialized…
The list just keeps going. Pretty soon you’re hiding in your bedroom with the door locked, laying across the bed wide awake, just to find a few quiet moments to yourself.
Or maybe that’s just me.
But this book gave me peace. Sarah talks about not feeling the pressures of all these things because they don’t matter.
What matters is you and your family.
The curriculum can figure itself out, in a sense. You don’t have to keep up with the latest and greatest textbooks, online schooling, classes, co-ops, play dates or anything else if it isn’t working for you. That’s the freedom we have with homeschooling our kids.
And it’s great!
I plan on reading this book again when we start our next school year. No, scratch that. I’ll read it about a month or so into our school year when I’m starting to feel frazzled and stressed with keeping up with that imaginary perfect parent.
I’ll read this book and it’ll bring me back to reality. The reality that I am the one in control of piling this stress on myself and the best way to get through it is to let go and remember who is in charge here (hint hint, it’s not me or you!). God puts us where we are needed, whether we can see it or not.
So grab a copy of “Teaching from Rest” and read it at least once a year. It’s a great reminder to tell yourself to stop worrying so much mom!
